Downy Woodpecker

Dryobates pubescens

This encounter was captured on film rather than in a still photograph — watch the clip below.

Identification

The smallest woodpecker in North America — black and white overall, with a small red patch on the back of the male’s head (absent in females). It’s easily confused at a glance with its larger look-alike, the hairy woodpecker, which is roughly a third bigger with a noticeably longer bill relative to head size.

Drumming

Downy woodpeckers drum against resonant dead wood to communicate territory and attract mates — a distinct, rapid-fire burst that’s different from the slower, more irregular tapping used while actually feeding.

Habitat & Range

A common year-round resident across South Carolina and most of North America, at home in forests, wooded wetlands, and even backyard trees. It doesn’t migrate, holding the same general territory throughout the year.

Diet & Foraging

It forages for insects, larvae, and berries — and its small size lets it work branches and plant stems too thin for larger woodpeckers to use, a real advantage that reduces direct competition with bigger species like the pileated or hairy woodpecker. In fall and winter, downy woodpeckers often join mixed-species foraging flocks with chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches, moving through the forest together.

Nesting & Reproduction

Pairs excavate nesting cavities in dead or dying trees, often reusing the same general area year after year.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a large, stable population widespread across its range.

The Encounter

Alongside the much larger pileated woodpecker, a downy woodpecker appeared during the same Congaree National Park outing — one of several small birds that showed up briefly along the boardwalk and River Trail before disappearing back into the vegetation.
